Philadelphia: Childs and Peterson, 1856. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Two hardcover volumes in stamped brown cloth boards. First editions. Titles in gilt on spine. Sturdy binding on both volumes, wear to edges and especially corner tips. "Illustrated by upward of three hundred engravings from sketches by the author." Light spotting to some pages. Tissue guards to engravings.
Volume 1 has a two-page Glossary of Arctic Terms and a tipped-in folding map of Grinnell Land. (Grinnell Land is the central section of Ellesmere Island in the northernmost part of Nunavut territory in Canada. It was named for Henry Grinnell, a shipping magnate from New York, who helped finance two expeditions in the 1850s to search for Franklin's lost expedition.) Volume 2 has a tipped-in folding map of the mean monthly isothermal lines in Baffin Bay. 8vo. 464 pp. and 467 pp. Heavy--will require additional postage if shipped outside the U.S.
The 1996 Lakeside Press edition--same title, same text--is in Fine, unread condition in brown cloth boards. Top edge gilt, with two shallow scratch marks. Illustrated with etchings and a color map. 12mo. 440 pp. including index.
