'In the Spring of 1941, Johns Hopkins gave me the privilege of expressing my views on the present conditions of art-criticism in a series of five lectures. And now I have before me the pleasant prospect of seeing them published in book-for, for which my deep appreciation goes to the The Cirriculum in Fine Arts of that university, the sponsor of both lectures and book....'-[From the Introduction]
First chapter - 'Representation of the general trends of art-criticism from 1920-1940'
Second chapter - 'the way modern criticism has interpreted and judged the problems of impressionism and post-impressionism'
Third chapter - 'the reaction of criticism toward the theory of abstract form, and the realisation of abstract form in cubism and in the new architecture'
Fourth chapter - discuss the attempt of criticism to depart from abstract form by promoting representational art, and then follow this trend which became involved with political and social propaganda and with pathology'
Fifth chapter - 'a study of the contribution made to criticism by the history of the old masters...opportunity to criticise the main ramifications of the history of art to-day, such as iconology,, laboratory-criticism and the history of modes of abstract vision...'
