(USA) First Thus printed off-white wraps, 166pp. Volume I in the Mallinckrodt collection of Food classics,a facsimile edition complete with page toning to resemble old book pages. Appert was a Frenchman and is credited with the invention of the canning of food in the early yeqars of the 19th century. This is a facsimile of the 1812 edition by Black, Parry, and Kingsbury, London. No markings, VG+ in original black slipcase with corners a bit rubbed. (1.8 FO 33/1. Paperback. London: Black, Parry, and Kingsbury, 1812. Second Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. NEELE. In modern maroon cloth, spine title in gilt to black calf label, gilt tooling. Internally, half title, [9], (x-xxv), [1], [1], 2-164 pp, [2] adverts, 1 pl (folding, B&W), damp stain to first 6 leaves including pl, text block edges uncut, modern endpapers, the first edition was published in 1811, & 1812 in the US. (191*113 mm). (see Oxford 141 & Lowndes 58 for the 1811 1st edition) Appert, a confectioner and cordial maker, began experiments aimed at preserving food in hermetically sealed containers in 1795. His success was regarded as being of strategic importance to Napoleon's armies and therefore not published until 1810. Appert opened the world's first commercial preserved food factory in 1812. He initially used glass jars and bottles, but soon changed to tin-plated metal cans.
