About This Item

New York: Longmans, Green & Co., 1937 686 pp.; HB w/DJ. From the collection of David Wight Prall, Professor of aesthetics and philosophy at Berkeley and Harvard, his bookplate pasted to ep. Pages: clean, ivory, tight one signature of brighter paper than others, numerous pencil annotations (see bleow) . Cover: gray, gilt block spine, gilt and reverse titles spine; v light shelfwear, head/heel curved, front top corner bumped. DJ: unclipped in Brodart, black, reverse titles all surfaces; modest wear, esp to corners and spine points, 1+" closed tear front, head/heel tatterd, small chip heel, spinelightly tanned, small abrasion spine. Fascinating early work on ethical and other issues of a rapidly growing art form and business of the day. Major work on "The moral, the political, and the aesthetic aspects of the motion picture." Flap generally compares this to Aristotle's "Poetics"! (albiet, stating a direct comparison is too ambitious). This is a copy sent to Dr. Prall by Cornell's Philosophical Review, a review slip w/ tissue guard marked "Rc'd 3/18/37" and requesting an 800-word review is tipped in ffep. Pencil underlinings and annotations in Dr. Prall's hand are throughout - on the ffep he notes dates of several publications in the summer of 1937 (NY Times, Syndney Herald, Lewis Mumford in the New Republic).
