About This Item

New York: A, S, Barnes and Company, Inc, 1960. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Hardcover. Good. Sanford Strother. 424 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Charles Edward Chapel was a politician and technical writer, best known for his articles and books about firearms. Chapel wrote about a variety of subjects such as aviation and forensics, as well as firearms. The exact number of articles is not known, but could be as high as several thousand, including 3,000 for Hobbies Magazine. After his military career, he worked as an aeronautical engineer at Northrop Aeronautical Institute in California, and wrote or helped edit many of the technical manuals for the industry. He also wrote several articles on ballistics and fingerprinting for the police. Most of his books were about firearms, starting with Gun Collecting in 1939. His 1940 book, The Gun Collector's Handbook of Values was one of the first to provide values and he contributed to later editions for many years. His most well known book, Guns of the Old West, is considered a standard reference for Western firearms studies. Illustrated with a few b&w drawings by Sanford Strother. A comprehensive guide to every aspect of pistol, revolver, and rifle shooting. This book combines two earlier works: Simplified Rifle Shooting and Simplified Pistol and Revolver Shooting. In the rifle section, the author discusses the historical development of rifles, nomenclature, cartridges, safety, aiming, slings, positions, squeezing the trigger, calling the shot, adjusting sights, rapid fire, field marksmanship, and ballistics. Mr. Chapel tells how to hit moving targets, how to select a hunting rifle, and more. The handgun section contains simple, well illustrated instructions for making high scores on paper targets with single shot and semi-automatic pistols, as well as revolvers, There are also special chapters on hunting with hand guns, the fast draw for self-defense and combat, care and cleaning, and more.
