About This Item
London & Lisbon: Jorge Welsh, 2009. First edition. 122 colour illustrations and 2 black & white illustrations. 4to (12 x 9 1/2 inches), 188-pages. Original coloured pictorial boards. An excellent copy in the dust jacket which is slightly edge curled. Text in Portuguese. The Portuguese version of the English title "Art of the Expansion and Beyond". This catalogue illustrates how European, particularly Portuguese, culture and art influenced the world from the 15th century onwards. The introduction presents an historical account of the Portuguese presence in Asia.It includes a brief discussion on the complex commercial network that existed in the region, as well as in Africa, before the arrival of the Portuguese. It also gives insight into the unique empire established by the Portuguese. The catalogue examines a selection of seventeen works of art, many of them extraordinary in their rarity, exoticism and aesthetic beauty, including a brass plaque from the Kingdom of Benin; a tortoiseshell casket and two black mastic and mother-of-pearl overlaid objects from Gujarat; a group of rare Chinese export porcelains and a six-fold lacquer screen from China; and three namban objects from Japan.[In print at 80.00 GBP.]
