HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents THE ARTS by Hendrik Willem van Loon. This RARE COPY includes the following HANDWRITTEN NOTE from Van Loon on back of dust jacket, referring to his timeline of the arts on reverse of doubled dust jacket: "To S & S--Last Minute Note--IMPORTANT--Please be sure that this is printed where every reader will see it. H.v.L." Dr. Hendrik Willem van Loon was a prominent Dutch-American historian, journalist and award winning author. Starting with the cave drawings of 2500 BC and continuing until the 20th Century, Dr. van Loon presents in 677 pp. (including index) a comprehensive history of how art, theater, music and the 'minor arts' evolved. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". Heavy, may require extra postage. Overall book is NEAR FINE. Pages (top edges were originally colored, but color has faded to a dark grey; front and rear end papers both include a handwritten, period by period, short historical outline of the arts) = Very Good Plus: somewhat yellowed with age, 1/2: shallow gouge to outside page edges, else clear, tight, sharp with no markings. Cover (red cloth boards with gold gilt particulars and gilt and 3-color illustrations) = Fine: dulled a bit from age, yet sharp, clear, spine unworn, square. UNCLIPPED DOUBLED DUST JACKET(aforementioned fold out hand fashioned and illustrated time line on reverse, yellow with blue framed color illustration by the author front, 4 illustrations by the author spine, particulars in charcoal grey) = Good Plus: spine browned, dulled, chipped and partially torn along upper fold, chipped one hole along bottom edge, yet entire double d.j. in tact, fold out time line clear.
