Description

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1858. xii, 412pp. Frontispiece and 12 hand-coloured plates by John Leech. Gilt-decorated red cloth. Some slight rubbing/bumping to extremities, small chip at foot of spine, splitting to head and foot of spine, hinges split and straining, holding by cords only. Preserved in a cloth chemise and slip-case. With two bookplates to front endpapers (including the gilt-stamped red morocco example of Sir Hugh Walpole, Brackenburn, Keswick) Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864), English sporting novelist and editor. Generally known for his hunting novels such as Handley Cross (1843), this is his first of two novels of high society, and is beautifully illustrated, as with all of Surtees' later works, by John Leech. . First edition in book form. 8vo.
