About This Item

N.p.: Reintree Press, 2002. Paperback. 8vo. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. 299pp. Illustrations. Near fine. Superbly bright and tight later edition of this chronicle first published in 1980 -- and an exceptionally choice presentation copy, lengthily inscribed and signed twice on title page: After signing in full at top in black fineline, the author then inscribes at bottom: "To Adlai Stevenson III / with warm regards / from the author. / In the 24 years / since this book was / first published, you / are the only sitting / Member of Congress with / the courage to speak / out on our behalf. / Jim Ennes / June / 2004." Laid in is a pristine 19pp pamphlet, "Assault on the Liberty: Addendum to 2002 Edition," also boldly signed by Ennes on front wrapper, and Ennes' business card. Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021) served as U. S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81), son of the governor who twice ran for president. Ennes (born 1933) was an officer aboard the USS Liberty when it was attacked by Israeli jets and torpedoed in the Mediterranean Sea in June 1967 with 34 sailors killed and 171 wounded, an international incident immediately downplayed by both sides.
