Traducção de Guilherme Braga com os desenhos de Gustavo Doré. Empreza Editora de Obras Clássicas e Illustradas. Porto. 1878. De 25,5x18 cm. Com [vi], xlix, [iii], 104, [i] págs. Encadernação com lombada em pele, com título e ferros a ouro. Com folhas de guarda marmoreadas e cortes das folhas mosqueados. Ilustrado no texto com cabeções vinhetas de Gustave Doré e em extratexto com desenhos do mesmo. Impresso sobre papel de elevada qualidade, muito encorpado. Exemplar com a primeira ilustração em vias de se soltar e duas folhas preliminares soltas. Tem manchas de oxidação nas margens das folhas. Esta edição é prefaciada pelo tradutor Guilherme Braga e contém, sob o título «Atala julgada por Chateaubriand», excertos do prefácio do autor da primeira edição. Publicada ainda em vida de Gustave Doré (Estrasburgo 1832 - Paris 1883), célebre pintor e desenhador, reconhecido pela ilustração de vários livros, entre os quais obras de Byron, Poe, Milton, Cervantes e Balzac, destacando-se ainda pela da Divina Comédia. A obra, publicada pela primeira vez em 1801, apresenta características pré-românticas. Uma apologia do Cristianismo, cuja acção decorre na Louisiana, sendo os personagens membros de uma tribo índia. Divide-se em 4 momentos: I - Os Caçadores, II - Os Colonos, III - O Drama, IV - Os Funeraes. I-156-A-12
