BOSTON: HOUGHTON MIFFLIN, 1902. First American Edition 1st Printing. Cloth. Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. F. C. Yohn. First Printing. From the recently auctioned collection of the Goldstone brothers (Steinbeck's bibliographers)--this one from M.B. Goldstone--with his small penciled signature to the top corner of the ffep. A handsome fine copy in red cloth boards with paper label to the spine. This copy is signed by Johnston on the free endpaper after the title and copyright page. An early work and quite successful--although not even close to the success of "To Have and To Hold" which was published in 1900. "Audrey" combined romance and history and was made into a silent film in 1916. Johnston was a lawyer and related to a prominent Confederate general in the Civil War. Her books are rare to find signed and in fine condition. Uncut paper edges 418 pp. This is a tight and square copy--clean interior with strong hinges and only a little dustiness on the paper edges--otherwise a fine collectible copy.

Chatto & Windus, London, 1934. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first English-language edition. 8vo. 295pp. Brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gilt decoration. Cloth a little spotted and with just a trace of wear to several extremities. A touch of spotting to the endpapers and browning to a blank preliminary and concluding leaf, and the publisher's top edge stain just a little patchy. Really quite a nice, crisp copy, lacking the uncommon dust wrapper. The basis for John Huston's magnificent Bogart movie, this Creighton translation precedes Traven's own translation which he produced for the American issue (Knopf, 1935 - the author is on record stating his preference for this version)..

New York: Grove Press, Inc, 1958. Very Good+ condition in a Good only dust jacket (see photos). Scarce clothbound edition, especially so in jacket. Clean, square, and tight. Sharp corners. The jacket has several tiny chips, two creases, and four tears, of which two are nearly 4 inches long. However the jacket is still quite attractive and presents well in its Brodart clear-plastic sleeve (removed for photos). NOT price clipped ($3.50). NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean and crisp. The third book in the trilogy. Translated from the French by the author. This is the uncommon clothbound edition [it was also issued in wraps and in 3 specially bound limited editions]. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
