New York: The Viking Press, 1972. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition, first printing. An advance review copy with publisher's slip laid in. Original green cloth backstrip with gilt spine lettering, maroon paper covered boards. Near Fine with a light lean to the binding, light fading to covers to a thin strip along top and bottom edge, and light wear to topstain. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with minor shelf wear, and a thin 2" partial slice to the top of the top of the front panel near the flap fold mended with tape on the blindside and with a corresponding mark to the board below. A very attractive copy of the author's fourth and final novel, which shared the 1973 National Book Award with John Barth's Chimera.
Synopsis
John Williams (1922-1994) was born and raised in northeast Texas. He published two volumes of poetry and two other novels, Butcher's Crossing and Stoner . In the past year, Stoner has become an international best seller. Both novels are available from NYRB Classics. Daniel Mendelsohn is a translator, critic, memoirist, and classicist. He is the author of the international best seller, The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million , and his essay collection Waiting for the Barbarians (NYRB) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the PEN Art of the Essay Award. He teaches at Bard College.
