The original autograph manuscript for the new Introduction to the 1923 third edition, but first American edition, of his translation of FANTASTIC TALES, OR THE WAY TO ATTAIN, first published in complete form in 1890, after an aborted partial printing by the Dryden Press in 1889. Hardcover. See Description. Small 12mo. Two books bound together. Full contemporary vellum. 1.) J-C. Scoti, Monarchia solipsorum. Second Edition. pp. 158, [4]. First printed in Venice, 1645. This second edition was printed by Elzevier. Pages are generally clean. A bibliographical note (listing several references) and an old ownership inscription - "ex bibliotheca Kripperdorfia" - are written in old hand on the front blank. The Monarchia solipsorum is bitter satire written against the Jesuits which, in its day, caused quite a sensation. The author describes a secret society of "Solipsen" (those who wish to govern entirely) understood to mean the Jesuits. The supposed laws, secret instructions and clandestine operations of the organization are discussed. The author's name is given as Lucius Cornelius Europaeus which is a pseudonym. Authorship is usually attributed to an ex-Jesuit named Jules Clement Scoti. Some, however, believe Melchior Inchofer (who's name appeared on a… Read More

1689 NOSTRADAMUS Prophecies Astrology Astronomy Occult Visions Prophecy RARE

"From the enslaved populace, songs,
Chants and demands
While princes and lords are held captive in prisons.
These will in the future by headless idiots
Be received as divine prayers."
– Nostradamus, prediction of the French Revolution

Nostradamus, considered, perhaps, the most famous prophetical seer, has been credited with prophesying important and impactful world events such as the French Revolution, Great London Fire, and reigns of Napoleon and Hitler. Nostradamus claimed that the basis for his "Prophecies" was founded in his judgment of astrology. He was heavily criticized by astrologers for being 'incompetent,' as no one could truly predict the future.
This rare 1689 Bordeaux edition features a fine, woodcut engraving on the title page and includes over 300 Nostradamus prophecies and visions.

'the queerest book in the world'. A choice Machen manuscript, written in the years of his greatest fame, and looking back to his early years as a literary drudge before he composed the supernatural tales for which he is best remembered. In 1889, the Dryden Press printed some sheets of his translation of The Way to Attain before abandoning the project; an edition was issued in 1890 with the title Fantastic Tales; or, the Way to Attain. Machen outlines the circumstances of the book's evolution (reading in part): "In 1888, cataloguing for Messrs. Robson & Karslake, then of Coventry street, I came upon a little dumpy book dated 1610. It was called 'Le Moyen de Parvenir', by Beroalde de Verville & looking into it, I perceived that it was, almost if not quite, the queerest book in the world. In 1922 this would be a… Read More

binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper.
