During the Civil War this U.S. Navy admiral commanded the "Colorado" in attacking Fort Fisher, then assisted in actions against Mobile, Alabama -- where on May 10, 1865 the Confederate naval forces surrendered to him. ANS, 1p, 4" X 5¼", Winchester, MA, 1873 September. Addressed to Mrs. L. Bibas. Near fine. On letterhead bearing his red printed "KT" monogram, Thatcher notes, "If my humble name is of any value to you, it is entirely at your disposal," signing boldly in full and adding his rear admiral rank. Handsome example.
