The short-lived French colony at Champ d'Asile on the Trinity River near what is now the area of greater metropolitan Houston, Texas, was founded in 1818 by a group of French veterans of the Napoleonic wars. "Fictionalized, but reasonably authentic, account of the French settlement at Champ d'Asile" (Howes R479). The first edition was published in 1858, the second in 1860. All are scarce: OCLC/Worldcat locates only 2 copies of the 1858 edition, 3 of the 1860, and 5 of the 1862 editions.
