About This Item

London: Ward, Lock & Co, 1905. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". [Maurice Greiffenhaten]. A first edition of Henry Rider Haggard's sequel to She. A first edition of this gothic fantasy novel by H. Rider Haggard, with thirty two plates, collated and complete. In the sequel to Haggard's extremely popular novel, She, the reader is plunged into a story set in Tibet after Horace Holly encounters a manuscript containing a second memoir about Ayesha. There are several variants to the first edition. This copy corresponds to the binding cited in Scott, with thirty two plates, and no gilt to the spine. (Scott 45. Whatmore F28). Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front pastedown, 'F. J. Noble', repeated to the title page. Prior owner's pen inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'F. J Roff' In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, rather smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards and the joints. A little bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with some minor wear to the extremities. Front and rear hinge starting, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. With some offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Although the foxing is a little worse to the front of the book, pages are generally bright clean with the occasional patch of light scattered foxing. Very Good
