A bright copy of this delightful collection of poetry from Austin Dobson, illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. A beautiful first edition, later issue of this volume of eighteenth century verses from poet and essayist Austin Dobson, illustrated throughout by Hugh Thomson. With 'Life's journey lengthens' rather than 'The long day lengthens' in the dedicatory poem. With a frontispiece, sixteen plates, and numerous vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.Irish illustrator Thomson was best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and J. M. Barrie. Thomson inaugurated the 'Cranford School' of illustration with the publication of his 1891 Macmillan edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Cranford'. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Discolouration to back strip, with shelf wear to back strip head and tail. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Internally, binding slightly strained to centre of text block. Pages generally clean and bright. Very Good
