About This Item

London : Walter Scott, c1894. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. E. P. Roe's popular first novel. With colourful prize presentation label to front pastedown; awarded to one George John Dale for regularity of good conduct on January 2nd 1894. Edward Payson Roe (March 7, 1838 – July 19, 1888) was an American novelist. His novels were very popular in their day, especially with middle class readers in England and America, and were translated into several European languages. Their strong moral and religious purpose, and their being written by a clergyman, did much to break down a Puritan prejudice in America against works of fiction. Barriers Burned Away, which first appeared as a serial in the Evangelist, made Roe widely known. In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, sound with slight bumping. Internally, binding slightly strained in places. Small closed tear to front free endpaper. Marginal foxing to first couple of pages, otherwise generally bright and clean. Very Good
