About This Item

Cambridge: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd, 1937. First edition. Hardcover [16mo]. Beige paper boards backed with blue cloth, title panel pasted to spine. 4" x 6 1/8", 130 pp. Very good, fading to pasted-down spine title, lightly worn boards with some rubbing to corners and edges. Boards lightly bowed inwards towards fore edge.. Otto Neurath was a pioneer in infographics and inventor, with artist Gerd Arntz, of the pictorial method of representing social-scientific data known as ISOTYPE (International System of Typographic Picture Education). Originally known as the Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics, developed at the Social and Economic Museum of Vienna between 1925 and 1934, the language recognized the principal importance of pictograms and their utility in transforming complex source data into charts. ISOTYPE communicated multifaceted scientific data into easily understood symbols that became almost universally known.

This text describes the the studies that lead to the language's development, as well as key symbols used in transference. The invention of ISOTYPE helped further other sciences and studies in data visualization, infographics, and cognitive mapping.

This copy bears an inscription from Neurath in black ink to front free end paper.
