About This Item

Sutton Publishing. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. First Edition. Hardcover. 0750921676 . Signed by Hershel "Woody" Williams a Medal of Honor winner who served at Iwo Jima. "Once the Marianas fell, the U.S. wasted no time in building five airbases there in order to send the Superfortresses, the B-29s, over the Japanese home islands to bomb factories and large cities. On Iwo Jima, the Japanese maintained an airbase and a radar system. Situated half way between the Marianas and Japan, Japanese fighters were sent aloft to harass the B-29s both coming and going on their runs. The radar afforded the enemy a two-hour advance warning of the bombing raids. Iwo was taken to put an end to this and to provide a refuge for our damaged bombers on the return run. "Corporal Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions... and repeatedly returned.....to wipe out one position after another." From signed card that is laid in book along with a Medal of Honor Foundation card. Williams signed book on endpaper. Very rare copy. 2001 reprint. Over 80 historical b&w photos, many previously unpublished, drawings of the principal tanks and aircraft, and paintings by the former official artist to the U.S. Marine Corps. ; Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Related .
