About This Item
Germany, c.1550. . A small engraving on laid paper, measuring 71 x 51 mm. Tape residue on reverse. Trimmed up to, and very slightly within, plate lines. Not the first state. See Pauli 185a referring to it as a Originalseitige täuschende Kopie in which the farmer with the spear has no feather in his hat. The image is of six peasants fighting with swords and other weapons. From a series of ten engravings first issued in 1547. Sebald, who may have trained under Durer, was one of a group who are referred to as the Northern Renaissance Little Masters, so named because of their practice of producing exquisite small-scale engravings.
