This is a book about the City of Brookings and some of what was required of its people to make it someplace special. It is a collection of tidbits and gleanings found primarily in the past issues of the Brookings Register, and from other publications, about the community. As part of the research for this book, I reviewed every issue of the Register from 1900 to the present. In some cases, I was also able to interview some of those who were involved in smoothing the rough edges and making the decisions that pointed the city in the right direction. Space did not permit mention of all that took place in this community over the years. In fact, after writing the chapters it was necessary to go back and cull out the least interesting in order to keep the number of pages to a manageable number. Despite my deep interest in and intense loyalty to South Dakota State University, I purposely left out the history of that great institution, touching only briefly on some of the high spots. The history of the university is another book in itself for someone to write. I also did not delve deeply into the history of sports at Brookings High School or at the university, mentioning only some of the highlights along the way. The history of Brookings sports is, again, another book waiting to be written. Accounts of crimes visited upon the city over the years are limited to some of the more spectacular or unusual... There has never been, so far as I can find, a history of the City of Brookings. This book comes closest to filling the bill, but still, it only glances back and highlights some of the more interesting and important events that have helped make our town someplace special.
