Description:
1805 1ed SLAVERY African Memoranda Capt Philip Beaver Bulama Colony Sierra Leone

Captain Philip Beaver was an 18th-century Royal Navy officer who is best known for his colonization voyage to the island of Bulama. This 1792 voyage proved to be a complete failure – the colonists who survived were uninspired, unhealthy, and apathetic toward establishing a new colony and moved to nearby Sierra Leone.
Beaver's book 'African Memoranda' is the captain's account of the events on the ship as well as on the island of Bulama. This first edition includes two engravings of the 'block house' on the island. Interestingly, this book became a catalyst for abolishing African slave trade.

Description:
1835 Life of Samuel Johnson by James Boswell FAMOUS English Biography 10v SET

"I hate mankind, for I think myself one of the best of them, and I know how bad I am."
― Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson was a famous English writer and scholar most known for his 'Dictionary of the English Language' as well as a collection of biographical accounts of eminent English poets. In the mid-1700s, Johnson met James Boswell, a Scottish biographer who wrote an extensive biography of Johnson, which, according to a number of experts, is the greatest biography in the English language!

In addition to the complete eight-volumes of 'Life of Samuel Johnson' this set includes both volumes of 'Johnsoniana', a work of anecdotes collected by Johnson himself. According to Pottle,
"This version contains both the original texts, augmented by the additional writings of the biographer and his subject, and the very valuable new and related material which Croker introduced."

1824 1ed Arctic Exploration Private Journal of Lyon Parry Eskimos PROVENANCE

George Francis Lyon was a 19th-century British naval officer who made his name keeping journals on his African and Arctic voyages. His private journals, particularly of his Arctic exploration with William Parry, became highly influential to later expeditions to those seeking the Northwest Passage encountering Eskimo Indians.
According to Field,
"Almost the entire volume is devoted to the narration of the peculiarities of the Aborigines of the Arctic regions. Captain Lyon's curiosity led him to observe with great attention, the habits of life, and traits of character of the different tribes of Esquimaux, which his humanity, and good management attracted to his winter quarters. They built their villages near his ships, and permitted a closer familiarity, than any other of the Arctic voyagers was able to attain. His narrative, therefore, abounds with incidents of their intercourse, and curious anecdotes of Esquimaux life."… Read More

1877 Japanese Woodblock Samurai History Nihon Gaishi Tokugawa Shogunate 22v RARE

An interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Nihon Gaishi,' a 19th-century book on the history of Japan by Rai San'yo, a confucianist philosopher, historian, and poet of the Edo era. This edition was edited by Jiro Yorimata, the original author's second son The whole work of 'Nihon Gaishi' was the first comprehensive study of samurai history, covering Japanese history, from the emergence of the Minamoto clan and the Genpei War, through to the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in the Edo era. His history was later banned in several provinces because it encouraged strengthening the authority of the emperor and was a major influence on the Sonnō jōi movement, a movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate during the Bakumatsu period. It became part of the private studies of Chinese people in meiji Japan and in their curricula became one of the most read history books from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. (Mehl)

1863 AFRICA 1st ed Speke Journal of Discovery of Source of the NILE River Egypt

John Speke's 'Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile' is a rare, 19th-century account of his third African expedition in which he and his crew ventured to confirm his theories about the origins of the Nile River. Joined with Captain James Augustus Grant, Speke traveled to Lake Victoria to confirm the Nile's source.
According to the DNB,
"the importance of Speke's discoveries can hardly be overestimated. In discovering the 'source reservoir' of the Nile he succeeded in solving the 'problem of all ages' He and Grant were the first Europeans to cross Equatorial Eastern Africa, and thereby gained for the world a knowledge of rather more than eight degrees of latitude, or about five hundred geographical miles, in a portion of Eastern Africa previously totally unknown."

1868 1ed Charles Darwin Variation Under Domestication Biology Plant Evolution 2v

"One general law, leading to the advancement of all organic beings, namely, multiply, vary, let the strongest live and the weakest die."
― Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species

In the summer of 1858, Darwin felt pressured by other scientific research, to publish his evolutionary ideas, before others who had similar findings. He began writing according to his big book of 'Natural Selection' – the source for 'Variation.' According to Freeman,
"This represents the only section of Darwin's big book on the origin of species which was published in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two chapters." (Freeman)

When completed, 'Variation' was by far Darwin's biggest book to date. In fact, when he sent it to the printer, he wrote a personal letter to Murray apologizing for the size.
"I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear o the enormous size of my Book"
Because of this, portions of the original manuscript were left… Read More
