About This Item

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1895. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". E. OE Somerville. The first edition of this unconventional work of travel writing by Martin Ross and E. OE Somerville. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. The first edition, first impression, limited to 1575 copies. Profusely illustrated with thirty one monochrome illustrations by Somerville. Martin Ross and E. OE, Somerville (Violet Martin and Edith Œnone Somerville) were tasked with writing a travel work depicting Wales as a tourist destination. Central to the work is the author's aversion to the travel industry and marketing Wales as a destination for tourism making the work truly a unique work of 'anti-travel'. In the original green cloth binding. Externally smart with shelfwear to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Marks and slight sunning to the boards and spine. Front hinge slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot and mark to title page and contents pages. Booksellers label of C. Woodall to rear endpaper. Very Good
