On Wednesday, February 6, 1889, the following item appeared on the front page of the New York Times, bearing a Fort Smith, Arkansas, February 5 dateline under the heading "A Desperate Woman Killed": Word has been received from Eufala [sic], Indian Territory, that Belle Starr was killed there Sunday night.
