  • Used

Description

[Np: np, nd]. Platemark trimmed, overall: 6;⅞ x 4¼ inches. Mounting remnant to verso; scattered foxing. Engraving by Conrad Westermayr, signed "C. Westermayr f." showing Benjamin Franklin with his iconic glasses. On Charles Nicolas Cochin's 1777 portrait, Sellers wrote: "This was probably the first likeness of Franklin taken after his arrival in France. It was certainly by far the most popular. The Canadian fur cap is worn in sturdy independence of fashionable usage, and the Doctor's mouth, and the glance through his spectacles, carry out the idea." (Catalogue of the Society's Exhibition of Portraits of Benjamin Franklin, 373) Carson Collection 1337 - "Very rare." Mitchell Sale 645 - "Very rare."
