Description:
Macdonald and Jane's Publishers, London 1974 Hardcover with dust jacket Jacket edges have short tears. GOOD book in GOOD unclipped dust jacket Acclaimed in the artistic world as one of her generations's finest painters, in her private life Romaine Brooks had striven to free herself of her mother's domination, which extended beyond the grave. Her mother died while Romaine was visiting Paris, and left her enormous wealth. Romaine stayed in Europe and the glittering intellectual society of the years just before and after the First World War welcomed her. Her art was enthusiastically received at her first Paris exhibition in 1910, but her reputation declined until a retrospective exhibition, held 1971, in New York and Washington. She formed several close personal ties with important people of both genders. Ten colour illustrations, and 36 b&w photographs
