G. W. Dillingham Co., Publishers, New York, 1899. Condition: Good. No dust jacket. 492 pp. Text block has light foxing typical of age but otherwise unmarked. Front free endpapers missing. Prior owner attribution on front pastedown and family birth records in pencil on rear free endpaper. Spine headband and tail are frayed. Covers are soiled typical of age. "Beulah" was Augusta Evan's first novel. It sold 22,000 copies in its first year (1859) propelling the author to become one of the most successful female authors of her generation (she was the first American female to earn more than $100, 000). "Beulah" is the story of an orphanage in the author's home state of Alabama just prior to the American Civil War. Her novels have become scarce.
