About This Item
Chicago and New York: M.A. Donohue & Co., 1932. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at front end page - "The great 'Beyond' and other places South of Hoboken- Beer and Skittles Alan Innes-Taylor" and "From one deep-sea diver to another Charles L. Kessler" and additionally SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at half-title page -"The top of the world with City of New York Wm. W. Darling", along with rubber-stamped "Byrd's South Pole Ship / A Century of Progress / 1933". The author lists Kessler as seaman and helmsman, Innes-Taylor as dog-man and chief in handling and attending to the health and well-being of the sled dogs. Darling is described as a fireman and a hard worker, and "The City of New York" was Byrd's flagship for the expedition. A great ASSOCIATION COPY, given the personalization of the inscriptions seemingly presented to a fellow expedition member, who almost certainly is Dr. Dana Coman, medical director on the expedition, as this title came with 2 other titles definitely from Coman's collection. The book is Very Good in the original green cloth, stamped in gilt front board and spine, with faint image of ship stamped front board and a penguin to spine, illustrated with black and white photos. . A few marginal marks and notations in ink, most notably at Coman's bio, p. 229, where the notation reads "Oh ! that there were more poets in this funny old world". With two parts of the dust wrapper laid in comprising most of the front wrapper and roughly half of the rear, hence wrapper is Good only. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Poor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.
