About This Item

This is v.1 of the three volume set. It is a 2000-2004 beautiful and exact reproduction of the Bible commissioned by Blanche of Castille from 1226 to 1234 for her son, who became Saint Louis IX of France. The original is in the Cathedral of Toledo. The binding is sheep or calf skin, the whole set of three volumes includes just fewer than 5000 medallions in full color illustrating scenes from every book of the Bible except Maccabees. The text is in Latin and some French. The company in Spain made only 987 copies. A copy like this, exact, could not have been made before 2000. We also have v.3, which is a separate listing. We hope to sell it to raise money for a community of French sisters in New York. The Wikipedia entry can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible_of_St_Louis. A five minute description of the set can be found at https://www.moleiro.com/en/biblical-books/the-bible-of-st-louis.html. The company authenticated that both volumes are from one of the 987 they produced. Perfect condition. The original sold for $22,000 for the set of 3 volumes. Great for a university library or Bible collection. $8,000 per volume. Proceeds support a Catholic community of nuns.

Extended Description and Notes

This set is one of 899 that was produced in 2000-2002 by Moliero in Spain, it is an exact replica of the original, made from 1225-1235 by Blanche of Castille, which is now in the Cathedral of Toledo. A brief history can be seen at: https://www.moleiro.com/en/biblical-books/the-bible-of-st-louis.html. It rivals The Book of Kells as an illustrated Bible. It has 4,880 medallions with Latin descriptions in the margins, and some French. The Queen commissioned it to teach their son Louis IX the Catholic faith, he is a canonized saint. It contains scenes from all the books of the Bible except Maccabees.
