About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1899. Limited Edition. Very good +. SIGNED by President beneath his photo of a hand on hip Rough Rider. Overall a very nice copy of this Presidential piece of art incorporating 55 illustrations by Remington, Frost, Beard, Gifford, Sanford and other well-known artists. Thick quarto 8" x 11", 323 pp. in Hunting Trips and 476 pp. in Wilderness Hunter, 31 and 24 illustrations in each book respectively. Bound in the original publisher's khaki cloth with a gilt elk on the spine, a bear stamped in black on the rear cover, and gilt-stamped labels on the spine and on the front cover incorporating a moose and a gun. Some of the gilt on spine has been rubbed off, mostly author's name. Ex Libris bookplate with an illustration of Don Quixote on inside front identifying previous owner as Manuel Bustillo. Some damp stains on bottom pages of book, minor chipping to endpapers, mostly side. Copy #81 of 1000 copies signed by the author below the frontispiece. Increasingly unavailable copy of this significant presidential book, especially in this quality condition. "Cowboys delight in nothing so much as the chase to show their skill as riders and ropers: and they always try to ride down and rope any wild animal they come across in favorable ground and close enough up. If a party of them meets a bear in the open they have great fun: and the struggle between the shouting, galloping rough riders and their shaggy quarry is full of wild excitement and not unaccompaied by danger." (p 332).
