About This Item

London: Constable & Co. Ltd,, 1912. Signed limited edition First edition, signed limited issue, number 215 of 380 copies, signed by the artist. Simon Heneage in the ODNB states that in the early period of Heath Robinson's career, "his best books were his own fantasy Bill the Minder (1912) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1914), in which, most notably in line drawings, he surpassed himself". A contemporary review in the Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art stated that "the illustrations are delightful, particularly some of those in colours" and The Bookman noted that "the humour of [the] tale of 'Bill the Minder' and the humour of the pictures is so delicious that when you look at it you almost wish you were a child again yourself, and when you read it you are one, and don't want to grow up any more." Quarto. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered and illustrated in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, renewed yellow silk ties. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase. Illustrated title page, 16 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Heath Robinson. A clean and crisp copy. Some minor marks to binding, corners slightly bumped, some foxing: a near-fine copy. Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 8 December 1912, Supplement, p. x; The Bookman, December 1912, p. 150.
