Description

New York: Grossman Publishers, 1971. Fascinating book: Jarrell's poem about St. Jerome with commentary by his widow, reproductions of his worksheets, and art by Durer that inspired the poem. Published during the 500th anniversary of Durer's birth. A slim book (75 pages in all) but an insight into the mind of a wonderful writer and his creative process--full of retreats and re-imaginings. The book is obviously a work of love by his widow to bring us this poem that Jarrell never lived to see published. (The book jacket states: "He married Mary von Schrader in 1952. They were inseparable; she attended his classes, he loitered in her kitchen.") Very good (some light spots on covers; interior clean and beautifully printed) in near fine dust jacket (1 small closed tear).. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Illus. by Albrecht Durer.
