New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Good+. Edward Larocque Tinker. 8vo. Pp. xxv, [2], 210. Illustrated with spot illustrations by Edward Larocque Tinker and 17 transcriptions of spirituals. Decorated endpapers. Bound in orange cloth with lettering and decoration stamped on front board; lettering in relief on spine. Slight age-toning to lower edge of front board and head of spine. In the dust jacket that has chips to head and tail of spine, and slight loss mid-spine. (Please see photo.) A bright copy in scarce jacket. Kennedy (1877-1941) began recording African-American folklore at age 13. Many of the entries were gathered from his family's domestics; one, a native of Gretna, Louisiana, would collect anecdotes when visiting home, and offer them to Kennedy upon return. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
