Description:
Athens, OH: Ohio University Press, 2005. Hardcover. Fine/fine. xi, [1], 363 p.; 24 cm. Red cloth with gilt spine and cover titles. Black endpapers. Illustrated dust jacket. Title page repeats portrait from dust jacket. The Ohio legislature passed the first in a series of discriminatory laws known as Black Laws in 1803. These laws made it difficult for Blacks to enter the state and for them to testify against Whites in court, among other things. As the movement to abolish slavery grew, there was increasing resistance to the Black Laws. Beginning in 1849, some aspects were repealed, but others remained in place until 1886. The author examines the development and response to these laws in Ohio. Book and Dust Jacket are in Fine Condition: clean and bright.
