About the author

Sheree Rene Thomas is an award-winning writer, poet, editor, and a 2023 Hugo Award Finalist and Locus Award Winner. She was honored with the 2023 Octavia E. Butler Award and was also an Ember Award Finalist. Her work is inspired by myth and folklore, natural science, music, and the culture of the Mississippi Delta. She is the author of the short fiction collection, Nine Bar Blues: Stories from an Ancient Future, a Finalist for the 2021 Locus Award, Ignyte Award, and World Fantasy Award for Year's Best Collection and winner of the 2022 Darrell Award for Year's Best Novella. She is the winner of the 2022 Dal Coger Memorial Hall of Fame Award and is #339 in the Walter Day Science Fiction Hall of Fame Trading Cards. She is also the author of collections, Sleeping Under the Tree of Life and Shotgun Lullabies: Stories & Poems. She edited the two-time World Fantasy Award-winning Dark Matter anthologies, co-edited Trouble the Waters: Tales from the Deep Blue with Pan Morigan and Troy L. Wiggins, and Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction with Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki and Zelda Knight, a NAACP Image Award Finalist and winner of the 2023 Locus Award.

Sheree Rene Thomas is the editor of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, founded in 1949 and is the associate editor of Obsidian, founded in 1975. Widely anthologized, Thomas' work appears in The Big Book of Modern Fantasy (1945-2010), edited by Ann & Jeff VanderMeer, Year's Best African Speculative Fiction, edited by Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki, Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror, vol. 2, edited by Paula Guran, and Marvel's Black Panther: Tales of Wakanda, edited by Jesse J. Holland. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times and other publications. She is a collaborator with Janelle Mone on the artist's fiction collection, The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, a New York Times bestseller. A former New Yorker, she lives in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, near a mighty river and a pyramid.
