The twenty chapters include: Race Inferiority; The Negro as a Farmer; The Exodus; Smoketown; The Wage Earner: Migration and Prosperity; The Wage Earner: Depression and Defense; The Woman Worker; The Negro in Business; The Negro in Politics; The Negro Criminal; The Mob; The Public School; The Negro College; The Negro Church; The Negro Press; The Negro and His Songs; the Negro's Contribution to American Literature; The Negro and Creative Art; In Defense of the Flag; and Negro Leadership. The new material contained in this edition was obtained from many sources. This work is approximately 40 pages longer than the first edition. Dr. John G. Van Deusen, was a professor of American history at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a biographer of Joe Louis as well as the author of one of the earliest academic studies of the Negro in the United States.
