First edition, early issue with Chapman & Hall imprint on both engraved and letterpress title pages with the new firm address (as of 1852) 193 Piccadilly. Inprint ot bottom of last page: London: Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriarsl Pages (1) 2-624. contains, Blank, Frontpiece, Vignette titlepage, Title Page, Imprint, Dedication, Blank, Preface, Contents, List of plates, five line Erratta. Text contains all Smith points except two which he lists as "may". 40 illustrations by "Phiz" including the frontpiece and vignette titlepage, 10 "dark" plates, bright, text and illustrations with minimal foxing and toning.
In mid 19th century half leather and marbled paper boards. Rebacked and leather corners recently replaced with tan smooth calf. new gilded 6 panel titling. Origibnal marbled paer covers and end papers retained. Cover paper scuffed with break in upper right corner..Edges marbled - faded

Synopsis

Bleak House is the ninth novel by Charles Dickens, published in twenty monthly installments between March 1852 and September 1853. It is held to be one of Dickens's finest novels, containing one of the most vast, complex and engaging arrays of minor characters and sub-plots in his entire canon. The story is told partly by the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson, and partly by omniscient narrator.
