The first edition of this work.An academic work exploring the history and development of art in Japan, in particular looking into block printing and book illustration from their beginnings up to the twentieth century.Looking at early printing and engraving in Japan, illustrated books of the seventeenth century, Moronobu, Itcho, Korin, and their followers, Osaka as an art and publishing centre, the impressionists, the late Ukiyo-Ye illustrators, and more.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seventeen colour plates, and twenty-five monochrome plates.Collated, complete.By Louise Norton Brown, who sadly died before this work was published. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards, rebacked. Externally, generally smart, boards and spine are a little rubbed. Light bumping to the extremities. Spine label is rubbed with a couple of spines. Ink to the tail of the spine. Minor marks to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Stamp to the title page and dedication leaf. Plates 7 and 20 are detached but present. Plates 15 and 29 are detaching. Good
