Octavo, 19cm x 12cm, red cloth with black titles to spine, unclipped dust-jacket, 191pp, last page used as paste-down, as issued, war economy standard issue. The dust-jacket is worn along the edges, chipped at the head of the spine with no loss of text, 3cm chip out of mid-spine below the title and above the author's name, interior is very clean throughout. Classic crime noir and Hughes' first novel. Published three years after the first American edition, this UK first is uncommon.
