In September of 1922, the organizers of the Hastings chess congress decided to hold a masters tournament which would pit two English masters against four of the best from the European continent. The participants of the double round robin were Alexander Alekhine, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, Siegbert Tarrasch, George Alan Thomas, and Frederick Yates. Alekhine managed to edge out superstar Rubinstein by half a point in the final, winning his most famous game ever against long time rival Bogoljubov, whereas Rubinstein struggled for over a hundred moves against Thomas only to come up short at the end. The 30 games are fully annotated by Alekhine, with some notes from The Field column added. A distant third and fourth was a tie, Bogoljubow and Thomas with 4 1/2 points. Fifth was the aging Tarrasch with 4 and Yates sixth with 2 1/2.

Front inner hinge cracked, corners bumped, spine ends rubbed, some light internal soiling else a very good copy.

Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. A reminder of pre World War I times was the international masters' tournament begun on April 7, 1922 at Pistyan in Czechoslovakia and concluded by the end of the month, for, with few exceptions, all the leading Continental players, nineteen in number, were on hand, and played the eighteen rounds through to completion. As a consequence a new chess king was developed in the person of E R Bogolijubow, one of the younger generation of Russian masters, who first came to public notice during the ill-fated tournament at Mannheim, Germany, which, when half over, was stopped by the World War. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. The first one in 1950 with others in 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959.In this tournament Miguel Najdorf and Julio Bolbochan tied for first with scores of 12 1/2. E Eliskases and R Sanguinetti shared third and fourth with 11 each. Jacobo Bolbochan captured a lone fifth with 10 points. Aron Nimzowitsch captured first prize, playing at that time, the hyper-modern openings. He did not lose a game with a score of 8. Tied for second were Friedrich (Fritz) Samisch and Savielly Tartakower with scores of 6. Rudolf Spielmann took 4th with 5 1/2. Ernst Jacobson was 5th with 3 points and Jorgen Muller was 6th with 1 1/2. With the Nimzowitsch win, this gave the hyper-modern school more respect.Condition:Spine ends and corners chipped, edges and spine sunned else a good copy, internally very good.

First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played.[1] The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments.
