About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1969. Thick, small octavo, xxxix + 1112 pages. Illustrated with numerous woodcuts in the text. Facsimile edition of the first edition (London, S.O. Beeton, 1861) in book form, of perhaps the most famous of all English cookery books. And justly so, in that it was not only exhaustive, with 2751 recipes, formulas, and instructions for all aspects of household management, but it also was one of the earliest cookbooks to use color illustration (not present in this facsimile, and one of the first to use the standard format we know now, with ingredients first, and then step-by-step instructions. Gift inscription in ink to the front fly, otherwise fine in publisher's gilt-tiled red cloth. Slight rubbing to very good dust jacket, illustrated with a design by Leigh Taylor.
