About This Item

New York: Scribner's, 1919. First Edition. Octavo, 156pp., illustrated by Carle Michele Boog. Two copies of the book; one in good condition, soiled and edgeworn, and one in very good or better condition, with the page block a tough shaken, but clean overall. Plus three original drawings (clarcoal on board), each measuring abotu 11" x 15", including margins, which are slightly more than one-inch in width. Corners have shallow chips, though two chips are quite large; none approach the drawing, and all are frame-able. One is already framed handsomely in black. The three drawings are final or very nearly final drafts by illustrator, Carle Michele Boog, a Swiss-American artist and illustrator who studied at the Art Students League and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The book, rather uncommon in commerce, is held physically at about fifteen institutions, according to WorldCat. The book is a collection of stories about Native Americans and their relationship to various animals. Wuthored by a white man in the early 20th century, the depiction of Native Americans is a simplistic and stereotypical one, and yet the illustrations are quite compelling, depicting a wide array of human emotion and a depth of personality in the various animals. The three original drawings here were all used in the book, and as such represent three of the last four of the 29 illustrations. These are captioned "He looked up and saw a giant frog standing on his left foot"; "My good brother, what have you on your back?"; "And he began to sing in a harsh voice." A compelling group of drawings, of potential interest to various collecting interests, including children's book illustration, artistic depictions of Native Americans, and early 20th century art.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
