Very Good. #300 of 500 copies. Illustrated with eaux fortes by M.A. Lalauze. 14 vols. 8vo. John Payne's erudite translation of the enchanting "Arabian Nights"-the ancient eastern tales of love, war, intrigue and magic- together with his versions of several related works, handsomely and uniformly bound. The Alf Layla wa-Layla ("One Thousand Nights and a Night") have enchanted readers for centuries with shimmering visions of "a land of fable environment whose deserts and oases, bazaars and slums, jeweled caverns and minaret-topped edifices are immediately recognizable" (Clute & Grant, 51). Intending to improve upon Edward Lane's translation of the tales into English (1838-41), John Payne labored for six years on his own version, consulting many of his day's most eminent orientalists-not least among them Sir Richard Francis Burton-and translating poetic portions his predecessors had ignored. "In 1877 Payne and a circle of friends set up a Villon Society, to publish in the first instance Payne's translation of Villon's medieval French verse... It was the Villon Society which was to publish Payne's translation of the Nights. Not only did the society help fund the publication, it also afforded some measure of protection for Payne against charges of obscenity, as it could be pleaded that the society's publications were for subscribing members only. In the case of Payne's translation of the Nights, only 500 copies were printed, and all 500 were speedily taken up" (Irwin, 26-27). Payne went on to translate additional stories from other sources: Tales from the Arabic appeared also in 1884, and when manuscript copies of "Zayn al-Asnam" and "Aladdin" became available, Payne published translations of them in 1889 and dedicated it to Sir Richard Burton. The Tartarian Tales were pastiches of the ancient tales, penned by Thomas-Simon Gueulette, first published in French in 1715 and appearing in English as early as 1893. The Thousand Nights and One Night in nine volumes; Tales from the Arabic in three; the remaining titles in one volume each.
