Charles Scribner's Sons, 1892-01-01. 2nd Edition. Hardbound. Good/No dustjacket as issued. Hardbound book in good+ condition. 2nd edition in dark red cloth boards embellished with silvergilt lettering and decoration. Gilting remains bright. Book is decommissioned from the Gloria Grace Griffen collection at the University of Nevada Reno, and bears the bookplate of that collection on front pastedown. Gift inscription in pencil on FFEP. Original endpapers show soil, aging and corner wear. Modern repair to the book's hinges includes new endpapers and pastedowns. Spine is beginning to loosen, and there is age-related toning at page edges. Head edge of text block has darkened considerably with age. There is bumping at head and tail of spine, with the spine bump extensive and resulting in creasing at bottom spine area of all pages in book. There is the rare margin note.

Synopsis

“There is an old saying in the Army which teaches that you can never know a man until after having made a scout with him in bad weather. All the good qualities and bad in the human makeup force their way to the surface under the stimulus of privation and danger, .... late friend and commander ....present volume, there will be found collected descriptions of the regions in which the major portion of General Crook’s Indian work was carried on; the people, both red and white, with whom he was brought into contact; the difficulties with which he had to contend, and the manner in which he overcame them.” -from the preface.
