About This Item

Alexandria, Virginia:: Time-Life Books, 1980.. Reprint Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: from a uniformly bound series: dark brown bonded leather with gilt text, stamped decoration on the front cover, all edges gilt, ribbon place marker; the series bookplate, with owner's name typed on, has been affixed to the front paste-down endpaper, otherwise in Very Good+ condition.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Marbled endpapers. Description: This is a volume from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series; and is a facsimile reprint of the original 1891 edition. General George Crook was born in Ohio in 1829. He graduated from West Point in the class of 1852 and immediately joined the fighting in Oregon and Washington. The arrowhead that produced his first wound remained in his body all his life. He proved an exemplary commander, watchful for the welfare of his troops, prudent in their disposition, always building strength before committing it. He was also remarkable for his mien and manner -- a cork helmet, a while suit, the choice of a mule for a mount and his total abjuration of profanity. The author of this book was born in 1846 to an Irish immigrant family and was a student of classical languages. At 16, claiming to be 18, he joined the cavalry and fought in the Civil War. At war's end, he entered West Point and graduated into the Third United States Cavalry where he spent the remainder of his fifty years. Bourke also made a study of Indian life. (Howes Final Edition, Number B646.) Includes the publisher's insert.

Synopsis

“There is an old saying in the Army which teaches that you can never know a man until after having made a scout with him in bad weather. All the good qualities and bad in the human makeup force their way to the surface under the stimulus of privation and danger, .... late friend and commander ....present volume, there will be found collected descriptions of the regions in which the major portion of General Crook’s Indian work was carried on; the people, both red and white, with whom he was brought into contact; the difficulties with which he had to contend, and the manner in which he overcame them.” -from the preface.
