"I live on Brazzaville Beach.Brazzaville Beach on the edge of Africa." So Hope Clearwater declares at the beginning of William Boyd's audacious and fascinating new novel. What is she doing there,a young woman, alone, far from her family in England? Why has Brazzaville Beach become her home? The various answers to these questions make up the interlocking strands of Hope Clearwater's compelling story. She is living on Brazzaville Beach because two sets of shocking and extraordinary events have happened to her and she needs time to evaluate their effects, and to attempt to determine whether,in the end,she has behaved correctly.
