About This Item

London: Sampson Low, Marston and Co, 1899. First Edition. Octavo. Frontispiece of Queen Victoria. 256pp., with an introduction by Major-General F. Maurice, illustrated with 27 full page plates of which 13 are in color, and 30 illustrations and diagrams in the text. Maj-Gen. Maurice states that while there have been numerous books written about the British Army, the author of this work deals with the subject in a manner more likely to supply what is wanted by a very large class of English readers. What has been written for a large popular and foreign clientele is sure to have been adequately stripped of such mere professional technicalities and might make it difficult for many readers, who would be frightened by any mere military text book. This volume will have been the most recent and accurate account of the army to date. Bound in a Khaki pictorial cloth over beveled boards depicting four men shooting a cannon, lettered and decorated in black, finely rebacked in brown leather, raised bands, title gilt, endpapers renewed, all edges red. A handsome copy without names, bookplates or foxing, with a note laid in from the publisher about the binding.
