LONDON : Lovell Reeve & Co, 1866 A very nice copy - part of Lovell Reeve's Crown Series - originally advertised as a new series of natural history for beginners. It has had an extremely good cloth case repair that has relaid the original spine, tightened the book and put in new endpapers. The front board has a gilt picture of a large beetle and there are gilt titles on the spine. The spine is slightly sunned and with some dark stain lines to one side. The bookplate of Thomas William Cowan has been relaid on the new endpaper. It refers to Cowan as a member of various societies including: Fellow of the Linnean Society, Fellow of the Geological Society and Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. It seems likely that this is the Thomas William Cowan of beekeeping fame. There is a faint stamp of another owner on the back of the frontispiece and on the title page. Contents clean and in good order including 16 coloured plates of beetles and numerous text illustrations. There is slight browning to the edges of pages. Includes publishers catalogue.

It looks to have been rebound in a good cloth binding fairly recently: the binding is in excellent condition with gilt titles to spine. Internally the endpapers are new. There is a small ink signature to the top of the title page but the contents are otherwise unmarked. There is a little brown spotting to title page and second 'note' page, but the remainder of the text and plates are clean and in very good condition. 113 pages plus plates (each with protective guard).
