Hardcover. 4to. 28cm, in 2 volumes, xxviii,498, & xii, 296,[viii]pp., with 31 maps, plans and plate views,(inc. 2 folding views), in half dark blue green morocco, gilt ruled raised bands, double crushed crimson morocco titles labels, pebbled dark blue green cloth boards, marbled endpapers and edges, generally cleaner than usual, very good to fine condition. (cgc) The plates: Of the 31 engraved plates, 10 have slight unobtrusive stain on the top margin, (one of these has some foxing on the verso), 3 are somewhat more noticeable (see pictures). He was the nephew of the Surveyor-General for the Northern District of North America in the latter part of the 18th century; his son, Joseph Jr., became Surveyor-General of Canada. Bouchette worked studiously and travelled extensively over a period of fifteen years to produce the most accurate and important topographical works of his time on British North America. "Probably the most distinguished of the Bouchette family was Joseph Bouchette (1774-1841), Surveyor-General of Lower Canada and a nephew of the equally famous surveyor Samuel Holland. Joseph Bouchette's books have played an important part in the geography and topography of Canada, some of them were illustrated by himself and he was also a noted cartographer" . Spendlove pp85-85.
